The body changes, the mental shifts, and the parts no one really warns you about
Pregnancy is usually talked about in weeks, scans, and due dates.
But what doesn’t get talked about enough is what it actually feels like to live in a pregnant body and mind, day in and day out.
I’ve been through it twice.
Both pregnancies were different.
Same body. Same person. Completely different experience.
I’m no expert, but I’ve lived it. And if you’re pregnant right now wondering whether what you’re feeling is normal, let me start with this.
It probably is.
The Body Changes (Some Subtle, Some Not So Much)
Your body starts changing before you’ve even wrapped your head around the positive test.
Some changes creep in quietly.
Others show up overnight.
Let’s talk about breasts for a second.
One minute, they’re normal.
The next minute, they look like you’re auditioning to be a Victoria’s Secret model.
I’m not wrong, am I?
They’re fuller, heavier, sore in ways you didn’t know were possible. Shirts fit differently. Bras suddenly feel offensive. And no one warns you how quickly that shift happens.
Then there’s the belly.
At first, it’s barely noticeable. Then suddenly strangers feel entitled to comment on it. Or touch it. Or tell you how big or small you “should” be.
Your skin changes.
Your face changes.
Your feet swell.
Your rings don’t fit.
Your body no longer feels like something you control.
Some days you feel powerful.
Other days you feel uncomfortable in your own skin.
Both can exist at the same time.
The Mental Shifts No One Prepares You For
This part catches a lot of people off guard.
Pregnancy doesn’t just change your body. It changes how you think.
Your mind feels busier. Louder. More alert.
You worry about things you never worried about before.
You replay conversations. Overthink decisions. Second guess yourself.
You can feel incredibly grateful and deeply overwhelmed in the same hour.
You might feel protective in a way you’ve never experienced.
Or emotional over the smallest things.
Or strangely disconnected some days, even though everyone expects you to feel glowing and excited.
That doesn’t make you ungrateful.
It makes you human.
Trusting Your Gut (Because It’s Rarely Wrong)
Here’s something I learnt through both pregnancies.
A pregnant woman is never wrong.
If something feels off, listen to that.
If something feels right, trust that too.
Pregnancy sharpens your intuition in a way that’s hard to explain until you’ve felt it yourself. You notice changes faster. You sense when something isn’t sitting right.
You’re not being dramatic.
You’re being aware.
And that instinct only gets stronger once the baby arrives.
The Beautiful Bits You Don’t Realise You’ll Miss
Amid all the changes and discomfort, there are moments that quietly stay with you.
The way your hands rest on your belly without thinking.
The first movements that take your breath away.
The feeling of knowing someone is there, even when the world is quiet.
These moments don’t announce themselves as special.
They just happen.
And then one day, they’re gone.
The Hard Parts We Don’t Always Say Out Loud
Pregnancy isn’t always magical.
It can be uncomfortable.
It can mess with your confidence.
It can make you feel like your body is public property.
You might grieve your old body while loving what it’s doing at the same time.
You might feel excited and scared in the same breath.
That contradiction is part of it.
You don’t need to enjoy every moment to appreciate the journey.
Why This Season Is Worth Remembering
This is something I didn’t fully understand the first time around.
Pregnancy is one of the few seasons in life that only ever exists once, even if you do it again.
Your body.
Your mindset.
Your circumstances.
They’re never exactly the same.
That’s why this stage deserves to be remembered. Not because it was perfect, but because it was real. Because you were becoming someone new without even realising it.
A Final Thought If You’re In It Right Now
If you’re pregnant and reading this, let me say this clearly.
You don’t need to love every moment.
You don’t need to feel confident every day.
You don’t need to have it all figured out.
You’re allowed to feel all of it.
And this version of you, exactly as you are right now, matters.
